Licenses, Authorisations and Agreements held by STFC

STFC has various SHE related agreements and is required to hold licences and permits for a number of its activities. Copies of these can be viewed below:

General Agreements

STFC Employer’s and Public Liability Indemnity –

STFC is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a public body funded by the UK government.

In common with many Government funded Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) UKRI does not carry Employer’s or Public Liability insurance to cover our the activities as we effectively self-insure via the Crown Indemnity scheme. Further details can be found here. The costs of any such claims would be sourced from in the first instance UKRI budgets and in exceptional circumstances the UKRI’s host Government Department and ultimately the UK Treasury.

UKRI’s exemption for employer’s liability insurance

As part of  UKRI, STFC does carry Public Liability insurance in respect of certain commercial activities, for example where we have commercial contracts to supply products or services to private sector third parties.

Irrespective of whether the UKRI carries Employer’s or Public Liability insurance UKRI (and therefore STFC) remains legally responsible and therein liable for all Safety, Health or Environmental incidents where we fail in our ‘Duty of Care’ to employees, tenants, visitors, students, facility users, contractors or others working at or visiting our sites, or affected by our activities.

If you have any concerns or queries with regard to policy in this area please contact John Sullivan, SO (01793 442128)
