Risk management

Effective risk management is a legal requirement and a core part of keeping people safe across STFC. All activities must be supported by suitable and sufficient risk assessments, and STFC provides clear templates, guidance and training to help staff identify hazards and apply the right controls.

Totara

Totara is STFC’s Learning Management System, hosting all online SHE training — from mandatory modules to BiteSize summaries of each SHE code and more in-depth courses such as Radiation Awareness and COSHH. Each online package includes a short assessment that must be completed for your training record to be updated.

Both classroom and online courses are listed in the SHE Training Catalogue, and Totara provides an easy way for staff and managers to track learning progress.

SHE booklets

STFC SHE booklets provide essential, site-specific safety guidance for new starters, tenants, and contractors. Induction booklets for RAL and DL support mandatory onboarding, while Tenant Safety Handbooks (DL, RAL, ROE) outline local requirements and key contacts. Contractors must receive the relevant site booklet before starting work, along with any project-specific SHE information. These resources support compliance with SHE Code 10 (training) and SHE Code 15 (contractor management).

FAQs

Why are some of my links broken?

When the new site launches all exisitng URLs will change. This is an expected outcome of chnaging to a new site. Report any broken links you encounter to the SHE web administrator.

What will happen to the content on the old site?

There are over 3500 pages and documents on the old site which would take a considerable amount of time to move everything over by the time the new site goes live. We will use Google Analytics data to identify the most visted pages/documents and prioritise what people are actually using. Where appropriate some content will be retired.

When will the new website launch?

The new and improved website is due to launch around the mid July – depending on internal review and penetration testing.
