Ensuring safety across STFC’s world-class facilities
At STFC, the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group provides expert guidance and practical support to ensure safe working across our world-class facilities.
From laboratories and large-scale research sites to complex experiments and high-hazard operations, we work with staff, facility users, contractors, and partners to manage risks, maintain compliance, and promote a safe, resilient, and sustainable research environment.
FAQs
Why are some of my links broken?
When the new site launches all exisitng URLs will change. This is an expected outcome of chnaging to a new site. Report any broken links you encounter to the SHE web administrator.
What will happen to the content on the old site?
There are over 3500 pages and documents on the old site which would take a considerable amount of time to move everything over by the time the new site goes live. We will use Google Analytics data to identify the most visted pages/documents and prioritise what people are actually using. Where appropriate some content will be retired.
I would like to get more involved in health and safety at work. What can I do?
Effective safety management is reliant on the active involvement of all in safety – you could volunteer to be a first aider, DSE Advisor, trade union safety representative, building warden, COSHH assessor or most practically by reviewing the risk assessments for your work with your manager and reporting safety incidents or near misses. The organisation also uses Departmental Safety Contacts (DSC’s) to assist in the dissemination of information to its Departmental members. Contact your local SHE group for further information.
How do I report an incident?
You can report any incident through SHE Assure which can be accessed by using the ‘Report an incident’ link at the top of this page
How do I create a risk assessment?
Identify the significant hazards, not trivial ones. Identify who is affected by these hazards and how they may be affected. Identify what you are already doing to prevent injury and then think, “Do I need to do more” If you do, put further controls in place. Record what you have found then implement it. Finally monitor the activity and review if there are significant changes. SHE group will always advise on these if required.
