While STFC's core activity is to provide world leading scientific facilities for the UK research and business community, we are committed to minimising the carbon footprint of our activities where possible and to minimising our environmental impact by improving our use of finite resources such as water and minimising the fraction of our general waste that goes to landfill.
Examples of ways that STFC has been able to reduce our use of finite resources can be found in editions of our in house publication inBrief dedicated to environmental issues.
STFC reports a number of environmental metrics for its UK sites:

Notes:
- General Waste is calculated based on the average weight of collected bins and skips
- The variation in the 'Total STFC Waste' figures is mainly due to the variation in the amount of recycled metal
- Both electricity and water usage reflect the varying annual running schedule of STFC's large facilities.
